A person who engaged in the ownership, purchase, sale, lease, or inheritance of a person or persons of African descent.

Wealth Attributable at Least in Part to Global Trade of Enslaved Persons

A person who derived financial benefit from the ownership, purchase, sale, lease, or inheritance of a person or persons of African descent, or from the labor of enslaved persons, or by virtue of being the progeny of persons who profited in these ways from enslaved property or labor.

Pre-emancipation Defender of Racial Hierarchies Supporting White Supremacy

A person who through speech, writings, or other actions promoted and defended racial hierarchies supporting white supremacy in order to defend or justify the enslavement of persons of African descent in the period prior to the end of the Civil War.

Pre-emancipation Opponent of Racial Hierarchies Supporting White Supremacy

A person who through speech, writings, or other actions opposed racial hierarchies supporting white supremacy and resisted the enslavement of persons of African descent in the period prior to the end of the Civil War.

Post-emancipation Defender of Racial Hierarchies Supporting White Supremacy

A person who through speech, writings, or other actions promoted and defended racial hierarchies supporting white supremacy in order to defend or justify legal or extra-legal, political or social discrimination against persons of African descent in the period after the end of the Civil War.
