Confederate States of America— Civilian Service


Indicates a person who served in any capacity in the elected government or civilian agencies of the Confederacy, including service in similar capacities in state governments allied with the Confederacy or in opposition to the government of the United States in the years 1861-1865.

Confederate States of America— Military Service


Indicates a person who served in any capacity – belligerent or non-belligerent – in the armed forces of the Confederacy or any local, state, or vigilante military force allied with the Confederacy or in opposition to the government of the United States in the years 1861-1865.

Ku Klux Klan— Reconstruction Era


Indicates a person who belonged to or publicly supported the Ku Klux Klan and the campaigns of terrorist actions against Black people, voters, and officeholders in the period from the end of the Civil War through the end of Reconstruction in 1877.

Ku Klux Klan— 20th Century Era


Indicates a person who belonged to or publicly supported the Ku Klux Klan and the campaigns across the United States after 1900 to reinforce the social, economic, and political supremacy of native-born and Protestant white Americans by persecuting African Americans, immigrants, Jews, and Roman Catholics and/or limiting their civil and legal rights and protections.
